Personal Care

There are a variety of personal support services available for people with disabilities. If you require assistance with daily living activities such as housecleaning, shopping and meals, or personal care such as bathing and dressing, there are a range of services available.

Below is a list of the various services with a brief explanation and a link to each website. Please note that the costs for services vary and many have application processes and waiting lists.

    Personal Care Agencies

    • Central East Community Care Access Center - This organization provides care at home and in the community. Funded by the provincial government, they can provide up to 3 hours of direct service per day. The Durham Office is located in Whitby and there are other offices within the Central East area.

Note: Having your doctor apply directly may reduce the response time for a meeting with a case worker; however, there may be wait times before receiving services. Also - consider applying to PAC (below) at the same time to avoid delays.

    • Community Care Durham - This organization provides care and support to Durham’s adults and their caregivers who have needs related to physical disability, aging and/or mental health. Some services are free and some have a fee.
    • Ministry of Health and Long Term Care - This website provides information on the types of care available (with links to Community Care Access noted above), as well as the various types of housing available for people requiring assistance such as Supportive Housing, Retirement Homes and Long-Term Care Homes.
